Los Nevados is a different scale: páramo, frailejón plants, lagoons and snow-capped volcanoes. It isn't an easy walk or an afternoon outing; it's high mountain terrain, with sub-zero cold, altitude and official National Parks rules. Below is a summary of the official page at the time of writing, but conditions change: check the official page before you go.

Official rules

All entry must be with an operator or guide listed in the national ecotourism provider register (REPSE), and with mandatory accident insurance.

For the Quindío–Dulima sector a booking is mandatory, made 5 business days in advance through your chosen operator.

At the Valle del Cocora attention point, hours are 6:00 to 10:00.

Ages and closures

Minimum age 15 for routes, treks and summits in this sector (6 only for certain attractions in other sectors), and a maximum age of 69 across the park. Minors must be with responsible adults.

The park closes three times a year for five days: the week after Holy Week, from the fourth Monday of September and from the fourth Monday of November.

Prepare properly

The park asks for health suited to high altitude, clothing and footwear for sub-zero temperatures and rain, good hydration and stops to acclimatise. Altitude affects everyone.

If it's your first time in high mountains, tell your operator so they can choose a suitable route.

What we don't promise

  • The posada isn't a mountain operator and doesn't sell expeditions.
  • This isn't an easy hike, and we don't present it as one.
  • Rules can change; the official page always takes precedence.
